The Benefits. The Hangover.

I can’t remember when I first posted that I was enjoying the benefits of an excellent hangover on Twitter. I can’t remember when and I can’t remember which account I used to do it. It feels like a very long time ago. I still use it from time to time and if the truth be told I’m stupidly proud of it. So much has changed over the last 12 months, but there has always been one constant in my life – the hangover and the benefits so when I decided to set up this blog it seemed to be the perfect title.

I’m not sure if this blogging lark still works but I’m going to give it a try. I’ll try to post at least one thing a day, much like I did back in the good old days of “it could only get worse”. Proper blogging. There may be the odd splash of SMEBS (which is a occupational hazard), some ranting about Magic Max (God I hate Magic Max), some musing (moaning) about being middle aged, some work stuff, the odd photograph of my feet and some pro-tips on managing your hangovers.

This is the new blog then. Bloody hell.

The night I met Tom Waits

I’ve had a near sleepless night. That happens from time to time when I’m worried about something or I have a head full of ideas. That happened last night. What sleep I did get was wonderful and full of a short dream in which I met Tom Waits.

I’ve never met Tom before and probably never will again; him being far away in America and a star and me being in Munich and not a star but last night, for what felt like an hour, I met him and can report that he is a lovely chap and we seemed to get on rather well.

As is often the case with dreams, it didn’t really have a beginning so, all of a sudden, I walk into an empty bar and see Tom playing a piano. I think he was playing “Martha”. He was smoking, which is naughty because you’re not allowed to do that in Munich but hey, this is Tom Waits, and if he wants to smoke in this bar then that’s fair enough thanks very much for asking. Now, I’m a little surprised that Tom is playing in this bar but he didn’t seem to surprised to see me and, squinting through his cigarrette smoke, waves to me and signals to the barkeeper to set me up with a drink.

It’s a bourbon.

He finishes playing and strolls over, throws a packet of Lucky Strikes onto my table and grabs a chair.

“Can’t you sleep?” he asks me.

Then we talked about Brecht, drank bourbon and smoked cigarrettes.

“You’re the reason I smoke Lucky Strikes”, I tell him.

“I know, Marcus, I know. Man, let’s go and rob a bank”.

Then I woke up. It was two thirty in the morning. It was the best dream I’ve ever had. That’s nearly four hours ago and I haven’t been able to go back to sleep.

I haven’t written anything for what feels like years but this morning, after my night with Tom Waits, it feels like the right time to start again.

Thanks Tom.

Not really surprising.

This is the new advert for Kinder Überraschung here in Germany.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26nZYii7KqQ] Look familiar? Of course it does.

The Facebook Bot

Last night, at around twenty minutes to midnight, this blog had a visitor. There’s nothing really very strange about that. It happens from time to time. This visitor spent the next five hours having a jolly good look around, which has also been known to happen. The strange thing is, I’ve never seen this visitor before and I’ve been writing and running blogs (a lot of blogs) for a quite some time now and you do get to know the people who come and visit versions of your digital self.

The new visitor was a Facebook bot.

In fact it was a number of Facebook bots.

Now, bots, spiders, crawlers and the-what-not aren’t new, obviously. Google bots regularly come and say “good day” as do a number of other digital creepy crawlies but I’ve never seen the Facebook Bot. Have you?

So, a big welcome to you Facebook bot, from all of me at the The Kaiser Rises. I only wonder if Microsoft and Bing know what you are up too?
